Year-on-Year Sports Betting Growth in Iowa Boosts December Revenue

In December, player spending in sports betting amounted to $282.7m, showing a 23.0% increase from the previous year in Iowa. However, it was 2.4% lower compared to November 2023’s total of $289.7m. Of this amount, $258.3m was spent on online sports betting, while $24.4m was wagered at retail sportsbooks across Iowa.

Revenue in December reached $26.3m, marking a 28.9% growth from the previous year’s $20.4m. Moreover, it was 86.5% higher than November’s earnings of $14.1m. Online betting contributed $23.6m to the overall revenue, while retail wagering accounted for $2.7m.

During December, Iowa players won a total of $256.5m from sports betting, and the state collected $1.8m in tax from these wagers.

In terms of individual operators, Diamond Jo Dubuque and its partner FanDuel remained on top in Iowa. The partnership generated $7.2m in revenue from $68.7m in bets. Wild Rose in Jefferson and DraftKings followed in second place with $4.0m in revenue and a $43.3m handle. Wild Rose in Emmetsburg, also a partner of DraftKings, secured the third spot with $3.0m revenue from $27.5m in wagers. Lastly, the third Wild Rose facility and DraftKings partner, Wild Rose in Clinton, achieved $2.9m in revenue after players spent $31.1m in December.

Looking at the year-to-date performance, the total handle for the six months until the end of December reached $1.32bn. During this period, the IRGC reported $112.7m in revenue and $1.21bn in player winnings. Tax for the six-month period amounted to $7.6m.
