Significant Increase in Iowa Sports Betting Revenue and Handle Compared to Last Year

In May, the revenue from sports betting reached $12.6m (£10.3m/€12.0m), which is more than double the revenue in May of last year ($6.1m) and slightly higher than the revenue in April of this year ($12.4m).

Out of the total revenue, $11.6m was attributed to online sports betting activity, while $1.0m came from retail sportsbooks in Iowa.

During the month, players wagered a total of $147.9m in sports, which is 28.7% higher than the wagered amount in May 2021 ($114.9m), but 16.6% lower than the wagered amount in April this year ($177.4m).

Consumers staked $134.3m online in May and $13.6m at retail locations, winning a total of $135.3m across both channels in the process.

The top spot in the market was retained by Diamond Jo in Dubuque and its FanDuel sportsbook, with revenue of $3.8m from a handle of $31.6m.

Diamond Jo in Worth, a partner of DraftKings, placed second with $1.8m in revenue and a handle of $20.2m.

Wild Rose in Jefferson, also a DraftKings partner, generated $1.4m in revenue from $18.8m in player bets.

In May, regulated sports betting activity in Iowa generated $850,598 in tax revenue for the state, according to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.
