Record-breaking Sports Betting Handle and Revenue in Louisiana in December

Louisiana sports bettors wagered $377.0m (£296.2m/€346.1m) on sports in December, surpassing November’s record by 5.7% and beating December 2022 by 48.0%. Online bets accounted for $344.9m, while retail sportsbooks saw $32.1m in wagers.

Revenue in Louisiana reached a new high of $55.8m in December, exceeding the previous record set in October 2023 by 28.9%. It was also 50.8% higher than December 2022’s revenue of $37.0m and 187.6% ahead of November’s revenue of $19.4m.

In December, revenue from online sports wagering amounted to $51.3m (after promotional deductions), while retail revenue was $4.5m. Tax revenue for the month totaled $7.6m, with $7.2m coming from online betting and $407,672 from retail activity.

Looking at year-to-date performance, Louisiana’s handle for the six months ending December was $1.60bn, consisting of $1.45bn in online bets and $156.6m in retail wagers. Combined online and retail revenue for the period was $194.2m, with $175.5m from internet betting and $18.7m from physical sportsbooks.

There are currently nine operators running online sportsbooks in Louisiana, including ESPN Bet, Bet Rovers, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, Betway, and Bet365. Bet365, partnering with Boyd Gaming’s Amelia Belle, launched in November 2023.
