Michigan’s Sports Betting Market Flourishes in July

Gross internet gaming and sports betting receipts from commercial and tribal operators in July increased by 8.3% compared to June 2021, reaching a total of $136.9m. This total also showed a significant growth of 32.4% compared to July 2021. The gross receipts from online gaming were 37.2% higher year-on-year, amounting to $126.6m. Additionally, gross sports betting receipts saw a 10.2% increase, reaching $21.6m, aided by a 9.6% increase in handle. Considering promotional spending, the total adjusted gross receipts for July was $131.2m, reflecting a substantial growth of 37.4% from the previous year. Out of this total, $117.2m came from online gaming and $14.0m came from sports wagering. Licensed operators contributed $24.9m in taxes and payments to the state during July. Of this amount, $24.1m was from igaming taxes and fees, while $815,409 was from sports betting taxes.

In terms of year-to-date performance, the aggregate internet gaming adjusted gross receipts for the first seven months of 2021 amounted to $798.9m, while internet sports betting adjusted gross receipts reached $88.1m.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) also reported a decline in revenue from Detroit’s three commercial casinos in July compared to the previous year. The total revenue for July was $107.2m, which represented an 8.3% decrease from July 2021. Revenue declined year-on-year at each casino, with the MGM Grand experiencing a 4.7% decrease to $51.2m, MotorCity Casino experiencing a 9.6% decrease to $34.8m, and Hollywood Casino Greektown facing a significant drop of 15.0% to $19.9m.

Furthermore, the MGCB voted to renew the licenses of the three commercial casinos last week. All three casinos received unanimous approval from commissioners to continue operating for another year.
