Maine Sports Betting Revenue Surges to Record Levels Despite Drop in January Betting Volume

Maine saw a total handle of $38.1m in January, down 13.4% from December but up 1.3% from November. Adjusted gross receipts for January were 25.0% higher than December, totaling $4.4m. Sports betting in Maine is taxed at 10.0% of adjusted gross receipts, resulting in $546,099 in total tax for the state. DraftKings and Caesars are the only licensed operators in Maine, with DraftKings leading the market with a partnership generating $4.7m in adjusted gross receipts in January.

Caesars, partnered with three Wabanaki nations, reported $743,762 in adjusted gross receipts from a monthly handle of $6.1m. Lawmakers in Maine are considering proposals to grant tribes exclusive rights for online gaming, following a similar model to the sports betting bill signed into law in May 2022.
