Kentucky Considers Legalizing Online Sports Betting in New Legislation

1 Min Read

House Bill 241 is a proposed legislation in Kentucky aimed at legalizing online sports wagering. It is similar to House Bill 137 from the previous legislative session. In addition to sports betting, the new bill also addresses the regulation of online poker and fantasy sports.

The bill is currently with Kentucky’s House of Representatives’ Committee on Committees and is being sponsored by 17 Representatives, including Koenig.

If passed into law, the bill would allow online and mobile sports wagering, as well as betting at approved sports venues in Kentucky. Both professional and collegiate contests would be open for betting. The bill designates the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission as the independent agency responsible for regulating horse racing, pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing, and sports betting in the state.

To obtain a sports betting license, there would be an initial fee of $500,000 plus an annual renewal fee of $50,000. The licensing process would be overseen by the Commission.
