IBIA Detects 88 Suspicious Betting Alerts in Q2: A Crucial Update for Sports Bettors

In the second quarter, football accounted for 32 suspicious betting alerts, surpassing tennis with 27, horse racing with 12, and table tennis with eight. Four alerts were related to esports, three for basketball, and one each for handball and greyhound racing. The number of suspicious betting alerts significantly increased from 38 in the previous year’s Q2. Europe was the region with the highest number of alerts, totaling 46, including 18 for football and 12 for tennis. Poland reported the most alerts, with all six being related to table tennis, followed by Denmark with five alerts, all for tennis. Asia had 18 alerts, all connected to suspicious football betting, with Mongolia reporting the highest number of four alerts, followed by Georgia with three. North America had 13 alerts, all in the US, with 10 for horse racing and three for tennis. Africa had five alerts, including four for football betting in Ghana and one tennis case in Algeria. South America had two alerts, one for football in Brazil and one for tennis in Chile. Australasia did not raise any alerts for suspicious betting. The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) highlighted Ontario as a noteworthy area, as the Canadian province recently launched its legal betting market. H2 Gambling Capital predicts that Ontario’s handle, including horse racing, will increase significantly in the coming years. The handle for 2021 is estimated at CA$1.14bn (£736m/€872m/US$876m) and is expected to reach $1.56bn in 2022, $8.02bn in 2023, and $12.28bn by 2027.
