Decline in Iowa Sports Betting Revenue in August Despite Increase in Handle

In August, revenue in Iowa for sports betting was down from $14.4m in August 2022 but 27.4% higher than $10.6m in July 2023.

Out of the total monthly revenue, online wagering contributed $11.6m while retail betting accounted for $1.9m in August.

During August, Iowa consumers placed a total of $141.2m in sports bets, which was a 15.2% increase compared to August last year and 28.7% higher than July 2023. Online betting made up $131.9m of the wagers, while retail spending reached $9.4m.

In Iowa, Diamond Jo in Dubuque and its FanDuel sportsbook continued to be the market leaders. They generated $3.6m in revenue and handled $27.6m in August. Wild Rose in Jefferson and DraftKings came in second, with $1.8m in revenue and a $20.1m handle. Diamond Jo in Worth, another DraftKings partner, followed in third place with $1.7m in revenue from $18.0m in wagers. The only other operators to report revenue above $1.0m were the Wild Rose casinos in Clinton and Emmetsburg, both partners of DraftKings. Wild Rose Clinton earned $1.3m from $23.8m in bets, while Wild Rose Emmetsburg recorded $1.2m from $13.0m in bets.

In terms of taxes, the total sports betting tax for August was $911,669, and players won a total of $127.8m.
