ZonMw has launched a research programme called “Prevention of Gambling Addiction” to assist in addressing gambling-related harm in the country.
The programme, which began on 1 March, is inviting researchers specializing in gambling addiction prevention and treatment to apply for grants. The registration deadline is 5 May.
This initiative is part of the Addiction Prevention Fund established under the Dutch Remote Gambling Act. The act, which came into effect in April 2021, marked the launch of the online gambling market in the Netherlands.
Managed by KSA, the fund supports research on gambling-related problems in both online and land-based gambling. The new programme specifically focuses on the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction in these areas.
Last week, KSA imposed fines totaling €26.0m on five operators for offering online gambling in the country without a license. The fines were given to N1 Interactive, Videoslots, BetPoint Group, Probe Investments, and Fairload Limited in December 2022. The details of each case were made public on 3 March after the operators’ request to keep them confidential was denied by the court.
N1 Interactive received the largest fine of €12.6m for repeat violations, as they had previously been penalized in July 2021 for the same offense of operating without a license in the country.
