The independent research council of the group will contribute SEK4.1m ($377,000/€347,000/£298,000) towards research studies on social responsibility. Since 2010, the council has distributed SEK45m to 35 research projects and studies.
In 2023, the council has selected five studies to support, in collaboration with academic institutions and various partners. These studies will focus on investigating the impact of self-exclusion and the challenges posed by fast payments. By conducting these research projects, valuable insights will be gained to enhance knowledge on gambling addiction and effective gambling responsibility measures.
Sara Lindholm Larsson, the chairperson of Svenska Spel’s independent research council, emphasized the importance of supporting such research for the benefit of society.
One of the funded studies worth SEK1m will examine the influence of fast payment solutions on problem gambling. This study will be led by Nathan Lakew from the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet.
Additionally, the Department of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg will receive SEK800,000 to explore craving among problem gamblers. The Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University will be allocated SEK800,000 for a study focusing on family-centred treatment.
Another SEK800,000 has been awarded to the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University for investigating the impact of the Spelpaus self-exclusion tool on gamblers and their concerned significant others.
Lastly, the Department of Criminology at Malmö University has been granted SEK700,000 for a study on gambling among university students. This study by Claes Andersson forms part of a larger international project involving the World Health Organisation (WHO).
