Irish Operators Embrace Social Responsibility with Credit Card and Whistle-to-Whistle Ad Ban

The Irish Bookmakers’ Association (IBA) has implemented an updated code of practice for safer gambling, introducing changes aimed at enhancing social responsibility. The code outlines industry commitments regarding player protection measures. All IBA members, including operators like Boylesports, Flutter Entertainment, and Entain, are required to adopt the latest version of the code.

The IBA emphasizes that the code represents the minimum commitments to be made by the industry. However, many operators are expected to exceed these provisions. Some operators, such as Flutter, have already adopted the credit card ban, while others are working to implement the necessary technological changes in their businesses by the end of this year.

To further promote responsible gambling, a whistle-to-whistle advertising ban will be implemented, restricting gambling ads during live sport broadcasts before 9pm. This ban will be enforced from 5 minutes before each event until 5 minutes after. However, the ban does not apply to horse racing or greyhound racing.

IBA chairperson Sharon Byrne acknowledges the ongoing need for the industry to continually improve standards for safer gambling. She views the credit card ban and the whistle-to-whistle advertising restrictions as significant steps in this direction. The IBA has long advocated for the establishment of a regulator in Ireland and supports the government’s commitment to legislate for one in the near future.

While the code is not considered the sole solution for problem gambling, the IBA believes there is more that can be accomplished under the guidance of a regulator. Nonetheless, these measures mark further progress for the industry in raising standards. Byrne expresses hope that operators who have not yet committed to the new safer gambling code will do so soon. The IBA also looks forward to collaborating with Ireland’s proposed gaming regulator to implement additional evidence-based measures for safer gambling.
