Impact of Contact on Swedish Players’ Behavior Change and Social Responsibility

The three operators have committed to disclosing their internal activities for responsible gambling starting in autumn 2022. These disclosures are shared with the Swedish regulator Spelinspektionen every six months. The data focuses on four key areas: the percentage of players contacted due to risky gambling, the impact of these interactions, the number of players who reduced their problem gambling habits, and the percentage of players who completely stopped gambling. The operators released their first set of data in January and the latest publications cover the period from January to June.

Kindred, one of the operators, reported that they contacted 0.5% of their players in regards to suspected or at-risk problematic gambling behavior during this period. This percentage remained unchanged from the previous six months. Out of the players contacted, 75.1% reduced their gambling habits after interacting with the Unibet operator, and 75.8% decreased their average gambling deposits. Additionally, 1.1% of those contacted chose to self-exclude from Kindred’s platform for less than six months, while 0.8% opted for a self-exclusion period of six months or longer.

ATG, another operator, reported that they contacted 1.9% of all their customers regarding their gambling behavior during this period. This is an increase compared to the previous six months when the percentage was 1.4%. Among the users contacted, 57.3% reduced their gambling habits, and 61.1% reduced their deposits. ATG also noted that 1.4% chose to self-exclude for up to six months after the interaction, while 1.9% opted for a self-exclusion period longer than six months.

Svenska Spel, the third operator, has not yet published the full figures. However, the CEO and president, Patrik Hofbauer, mentioned that 70% of their customers decreased their gambling after being contacted by the operator. These figures are part of Svenska Spel’s half-yearly disclosures that showcase the proportion of customers who were contacted due to signs of risky gambling and the impact of these interactions. According to Hofbauer, these measures have had a positive effect. He made these comments during the release of Svenska Spel’s results for the first half, which showed a marginal increase in net gaming revenue compared to the previous year, driven by digital business growth.
