In the first six months of 2022, a total of 43,500 people signed up for the scheme, resulting in an average of over 7,000 registrations per month. This represents a 9% increase compared to the same period last year.
Traditionally, the winter months have seen the highest number of registrations. However, in the second quarter of 2022, there were more joinings compared to the final quarter of 2021, indicating a change in the trend.
Following the latest delay to the UK gambling white paper, which determines legislative reform for the country’s Gambling Act of 2005, Gamstop released this report. The white paper, originally planned for release last year, is now expected in the autumn.
Fiona Palmer, the CEO of Gamstop, emphasized the need for increased protection for individuals at risk of harm. She highlighted that gambling-related harm remains a significant issue, and action is required to safeguard those most vulnerable. The average number of new registrants per month has increased by almost double digits year-on-year, currently surpassing 7,000. Palmer suggested that the growth in registrations may be attributed to both increased harm and increased awareness of Gamstop.
Palmer expressed anticipation to see the government’s recommendations for gambling law reform in the forthcoming white paper, now expected to be released in the autumn.
