The Syndicat des Professionnels et Professionnelles du Gouvernement du Québec (SPGQ) has initiated industrial action in response to failed negotiations. Loto-Québec has criticized the “pressure tactics” employed by SPGQ employees. Despite an initial agreement between union leadership and government negotiators on August 25th, the deal fell through when it was put to a vote among SPGQ members. As a result of the strike, Loto-Québec has chosen to postpone the deployment of the lottery, as there is no guarantee of a successful rollout. Consequently, Lotto 6/49 operations will be suspended after the draw on September 10th, with no validation of tickets possible starting from September 11th. Loto-Québec advises ticket holders to retain their tickets until the situation is resolved. In an accompanying open letter on September 7th, SPGQ vice-president Lydia Martel stressed the significance of Loto-Québec’s staff, highlighting their expertise in combating illegal gambling and redirecting revenue away from organized crime.
