Veikkaus has confirmed that none of its information systems have been compromised by the logins and no “irregularities” have been detected in any accounts.
The logins were the result of a software attacker who managed to gain access to Veikkaus’ services by guessing customers’ usernames and passwords using a software tool.
As a result, the attacker may have accessed the game accounts of around 800 customers and locked some of the accounts through incorrect login attempts.
However, Veikkaus has stated that there have been no suspicious gaming activities on the compromised accounts.
The local police have been informed and customers whose information may have been compromised have been advised to change their passwords.
Veikkaus has emphasized that the hacker was unable to transfer any money from the accounts due to the authentication measures in place.
“Due to the nature of the attack, we believe that the risk of misuse of the gaming accounts and personal data is low,” said Hannah Kyrki, director of legal and corporate responsibility at Veikkaus.
“So far, we have not detected any unusual events in the game accounts targeted by the attack. We will continue to closely monitor the situation,” Kyrki added.
Last week, Veikkaus began negotiations with 830 staff members as part of preparations for up to 200 redundancies.
