Sportpesa Complies with Legal Regulations as it Resumes Operations in Kenya

Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri is thrilled to announce the brand’s return to Kenya under a new license holder, Milestone, whose details are not yet fully known. Milestone is based in the same offices as Sportpesa’s previous licensing partner. Karauri emphasizes that Sportpesa will uphold the highest standards of service and responsible gaming as market leaders. The company looks forward to collaborating closely with the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) and all stakeholders. In the coming weeks and months, Sportpesa aims to establish partnerships prioritizing sports development within communities across Kenya.

Previously, Sportpesa and rival Betin withdrew from the Kenyan market due to a significant increase in betting stake excise tax from 10% to 20%. However, this tax was eventually repealed in June due to the reduced tax revenue caused by players shifting to offshore sites. Despite this, the government plans to reintroduce the tax within the next six months. Sportpesa’s departure was also prompted by a dispute over a winnings tax, leading authorities to block payments and sponsorship agreements. Eventually, the court ruled in Sportpesa’s favor, stating that the tax should be collected from players and not operators.

Sportpesa is in ongoing discussions with authorities to establish a fair and effective taxation system that promotes responsible behavior from consumers and operators. The operator’s immediate focus is on forming partnerships and community initiatives with local communities and sports teams. Previously, Sportpesa sponsored prominent Kenyan sports clubs, such as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. These teams have since signed sponsorship deals with Betsson’s Betsafe. Sportpesa also had sponsorship agreements with Premier League club Everton and Formula One team Racing Point, both of which ended earlier this year. The operator’s return is expected to benefit the Kenyan economy and create job opportunities in post-Covid-19 recovery.
