Legal Compliance Issues: Betfair, Betway, and SkillOnNet Fail in Appeals Against Swedish Penalties

1 Min Read

The Supreme Administrative Court has upheld the historic penalties issued by Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen against Betfair, Betway, and Skill On Net.

Betfair was penalized for allowing wagering on sporting events featuring a majority of participants under the age of 18. This goes against regulations as it increases the risk of minors being exposed to attempts to manipulate sporting results. Betfair’s initial appeal was rejected, and the penalty was eventually reduced from SEK5.5m to SEK4.5m.

Betway was issued a penalty for breaching bonus rules in Sweden. Licensed operators are only allowed to offer players a bonus upon their initial sign-up, but Betway offered bonuses on multiple occasions after the initial sign-up. The penalty was reduced to SEK4.7m after an appeal, but the Court of Appeal rejected a further appeal, and the penalty stands.

SkillOnNet was penalized for breaching regulations by offering players bonuses on multiple occasions and providing lottery games that were not covered by its license. The penalties against SkillOnNet have not been successfully appealed, and the operator remains liable for a SEK14m penalty.
