Legal Compliance and Updates on Brazil and US Sports Betting – Episode 17

2 Min Read

In this episode of the World Series of Politics, we provide updates on the current state of legal compliance in Brazil, particularly regarding sports betting. The regulatory process in Brazil is undergoing further evolutions, transitioning from a provisional measure to a bill. This transition introduces additional legislative hurdles and the possibility of incorporating other forms of gambling, such as integrated resorts, into the process. While this expansion could potentially grow the market, it also increases the chances of the bill failing to pass.

Turning our attention to the United States, we shift our focus to Missouri’s unresolved betting regulations. Senator Denny Hoskins remains steadfast and immovable in the process, hindering any progress. This lack of resolution benefits neighboring states like Kansas and Arkansas that have legalized sports betting, leaving Missouri behind.

Unfortunately, hopes for Minnesota sports betting regulation in 2023 have been dashed due to political priorities and tribal reservations. Moving forward, passing sports betting legislation will become significantly more challenging with the upcoming house reelection in 2024.

Although Texas sports betting has suffered another year of defeat, efforts by representatives have pushed the bill further than ever before, gaining bipartisan support in the house. However, the bill was ultimately blocked by the senate, highlighting the need for more education and understanding within this legislative body. Despite this setback, the possibility of progress in Texas by 2025 remains hopeful, especially with the potential development of casinos in the state.

On a more positive note, North Carolina sports betting regulation appears to be making progress. Both Brendan and Brandt are confident that the bill will pass, although it must navigate through three senate committees, resulting in potential changes before returning to the house. Regardless, North Carolina seems poised to expand its legal market to include mobile wagering.

Stay tuned for future episodes of the World Series of Politics, where we will have more special guests joining the discussion!
