September Detroit Casino Revenue Drops to $101.6 Million in Financial Setback

In September 2022, the monthly aggregate revenue in Detroit was 1.7% lower than $103.4 million.

Compared to August of the same year, the revenue was 3.2% behind $104.9 million.

Out of the total revenue, $100.0 million came from table games and slots, showing a 0.8% decline from the previous year and a 4.4% decrease from August.

Retail qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) in September amounted to $1.6 million, a 39.4% decrease from the previous year but a 396.6% increase from August.

The betting handle for the month reached $18.1 million.

MGM holds the leading position in Detroit’s market with a market share of 44%.

Looking at individual casino performance, MGM had $44.7 million in table games and slots revenue and $43,528 in sports betting QAGR in September, securing its position as the market leader.

MotorCity placed second with a market share of 31% and reported $31.0 million in table games and slots revenue, along with retail betting QAGR of $875,616.

Hollywood Casino at Greektown followed with 25% of the Detroit market share, reporting $24.3 million in revenue from table games and slots and betting QAGR of $655,816.

Collectively, the three casinos paid $8.1 million in casino games-related tax to the state of Michigan.

Additionally, $12.3 million in wagering and development agreement payments were sent to the city of Detroit.

Taxes of $59,533 were paid to the state and $72,763 to the city of Detroit from sports betting.

On the online front, Michigan’s online gambling data for September revealed gross receipts of $210.4 million from commercial and tribal operators in internet gaming and sports betting.

Online casino revenue accounted for the majority, reaching $166.4 million, showing a 29.3% increase from the previous year.

In contrast, sports betting gross receipts declined by 8.0%, reaching $44.0 million for the month, despite a 25.6% increase in handle, amounting to $457.7 million.
