Spelinspektionen issued a warning and a SEK20m (£1.7m/€2.0m/$2.4m) penalty fee against Betsson last year for allegedly providing games through unregistered gaming agents by selling vouchers at Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven. This was deemed an offense according to the Gaming Act, resulting in unauthorised payments received by Betsson.
However, on 14 June 2021, the court dismissed the fine and concluded that the sale of vouchers did not constitute the provision of games through unregistered gaming agents, nor did Betsson receive illegitimate payments. The court also ruled that the benefits offered to Betsson Mastercard holders were not considered unauthorized bonuses.
As a result of the overturning, the court nullified Spelinspektionen’s original complaint, and the regulator has chosen not to appeal further. In a separate case, last week, Spelinspektionen appealed a decision from the Linköping court regarding penalties imposed on Genesis Global and Aspire Global’s AG Communications for issues related to the online self-exclusion tool Spelpaus.
