The latest revenue figures from Macau’s casinos show a significant increase in February 2021 compared to the same month in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic led to temporary closures. The revenue for February 2021 reached MOP7.31bn (£655.7m/€759.4m/$915.4m), marking the first year-on-year growth since September 2019. The revenue, however, remains behind pre-pandemic levels. In February 2019, Macau’s casinos reported revenue of MOP25.37bn. Despite social distancing measures and travel restrictions, there is some optimism as the Macau government lifted quarantine requirements for certain cities, allowing for increased tourism. However, the Chinese government is also intensifying efforts to limit its citizens’ gambling activities.
