In August, casino revenue in Macau reached MOP5.88bn, showing a significant increase from the previous year’s figure of MOP2.21bn. However, this still remains the second-lowest monthly total for 2021, with July’s revenue reaching MOP4.44bn. It is important to note that the current casino revenue in Macau still falls below the totals of 2019. In August 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the revenue amounted to MOP24.62bn.
Alongside these figures, it is worth mentioning that the Macau government has recently increased testing requirements for individuals leaving the Special Administrative Region. Now, anyone departing Macau must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test within 48 hours. Similarly, individuals traveling to Guangdong Province must have a negative test result within 24 hours. Moreover, travelers coming from China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan must present a negative test result within 24 hours of their arrival in Macau.
It is important to consider this information in the context of ongoing consultations regarding changes to Macau’s regulatory framework for the casino industry. These changes may involve reducing the number of concessions and banning sub-concessions, as well as shortening the length of license terms. The consultation period will last for 45 days and will also seek feedback from stakeholders on the potential implementation of “government delegates” at casino operators.
