The research conducted in March 2022 analyzed the responses of 215 individuals aged 21-64, focusing on sports-betting. The majority of respondents (83%) were male. The study provided valuable insights into the mobile sports betting market in New York, which officially launched on 10 January 2022.
According to the findings, the average number of mobile sports betting apps used by respondents in New York was 3.3, surpassing the average of 2.8 apps used in New Jersey. Among the respondents, 23% reported using four apps, while 19% used two apps. The third most popular choice was to use three apps, accounting for 18% of the respondents. A smaller percentage, 6%, utilized six apps, and 4% used seven apps.
When it comes to operators, DraftKings was mentioned by 63% of sports bettors as one of the real-money online sportsbooks, followed closely by FanDuel at 58%. Of the customers, 29% favored DraftKings as their preferred sportsbook, whereas 28% preferred FanDuel. BetMGM and Caesars secured the third and fourth positions, with 12% and 10% of the vote, respectively.
Furthermore, the research highlighted that 81% of respondents residing in New York City had previously engaged in sports betting in another state before the market’s launch. It was also observed that using a mobile sports betting app in a different state prior to its availability in New York increased customer retention rates for operators. For instance, if FanDuel was the first app used in New York, 79% of respondents marked it as their favorite. However, this figure rose to 89% if they had already used FanDuel outside of New York before the market launch. Similar trends were observed for DraftKings, with 72% favoring it as the first app used in New York and 80% marking it as their favorite if they had used it outside the state. This pattern was consistent for BetMGM and Caesars as well.
