The Suspicious Betting Reporting Mechanism (SBRM) is now available to all Malta-licensed operators offering sports betting. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) originally planned to implement the requirement for operators to report suspicious betting on 1 January, but they have decided to introduce the tool earlier. This allows for a smoother transition and enables the MGA to make any necessary updates before the official obligation begins next year.
Starting from 1 January 2021, all operators must utilize the SBRM tool. The MGA will provide licensees with a manual detailing how to utilize the new system. The SBRM is a part of the MGA’s requirements for reporting suspicious betting, which were published in May following a consultation with operators. No objections were made by any of the 10 respondents. However, some concerns were raised about potential disputes between operators and players who may have their winnings and bets withheld during investigations.
The MGA has assured that they will publish periodic updates on the progress of cases, allowing operators to inform affected customers.
