The conglomerate has expressed interest in entering the sports betting market for some time now. In November of last year, Chapek, CEO of Disney, stated that ESPN, their sports broadcasting arm, would be the perfect channel to facilitate this move.
In an earnings call following the announcement of second-quarter results, Chapek revealed that discussions with potential partners have been ongoing. He emphasized that sports betting remains a viable option for Disney and that they have been in talks with various platforms to enhance the sports betting experience for their guests.
Chapek highlighted the importance of incorporating utility for sports fans under the age of 30 within ESPN’s overall portfolio. He expressed their dedication to this endeavor and their hope of announcing a partnership in the future to access the revenue stream generated by sports betting.
Disney already has a presence in the sports betting market through ESPN. In September 2020, ESPN entered into agreements with DraftKings and William Hill, the latter of which was acquired by Caesars. As part of these agreements, ESPN has been promoting DraftKings’ daily fantasy sport updates and displaying William Hill’s betting odds.
