The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on people’s health, as well as their economic and social well-being.
According to the World Health Organisation (2020), Covid-19 has resulted in over 1.24 million deaths worldwide and more than 48.8 million recorded cases.
In South Africa, the country has experienced the highest number of cases in Africa, with 734,175 active cases, 19,749 deaths, and 675,593 recoveries as of November 2020.
The pandemic has also caused a global recession, with South Africa among the countries affected. The lockdown implemented in South Africa led to further economic decline and the loss of 2.2 million jobs.
Due to the closure of land-based gambling operators during the lockdown, online gambling options became more prevalent, leading to increased advertisements for online casino games and play on television and social media.
While the increase in gambling-related advertisements coincided with more individuals seeking to have their self-bans lifted, there is currently insufficient data to establish a direct link.
Despite these challenges, the Foundation continued to offer treatment and counseling for gambling addiction. By utilizing online methods such as online counseling and remote consultations, the Foundation ensured that patients still received the necessary support.
Social media campaigns focused on responsible gambling messaging were intensified, highlighting the dangers of illegal gambling and providing information on how family members can support their loved ones with gambling problems.
In partnership with the Gambling Industry, Provincial Gambling Regulators, and IManage Africa, the Foundation took a proactive approach to address the consequences of illegal gambling.
Considering the increasing number of Covid-19 cases and related deaths, the Foundation extended its services to provide free grief counseling for those who have lost loved ones.
