The Department of Justice has announced that legislation is being prepared to establish the Gambling Regulatory Authority, with plans for publication in the autumn. A programme board has been established to oversee the legislative process. The early appointment of Anne Marie Caulfield as CEO is aimed at minimizing the time between enactment of the legislation and the regulator’s commencement of operations. This appointment is an important milestone in the future establishment of the Gambling Regulatory Authority.
The establishment of a gaming regulator for the Republic of Ireland was first proposed in 2019. A bill outlining the plans, titled the General Scheme of the Gambling Regulation, was released in October 2021. It stated that the gambling regulator would have full authority over licensing and gambling advertising within the Republic.
