According to the AGCO, Unibet allegedly violated the Standards for Internet Gaming by promoting “generous welcome offers” through broad gambling inducements from 19-22 May. These inducements were prohibited from being advertised to the public and should have been limited to Unibet’s licensed site or through direct advertising after obtaining player consent. As a result of breaching these standards, Unibet received a financial penalty. However, Unibet has the right to appeal this decision to the Licence Appeal Tribunal, an independent adjudicative tribunal. AGCO chief executive and registrar Tom Mungham emphasized the importance of responsible gambling, player protection, and game integrity for all registered operators. AGCO will continue monitoring these gaming sites to ensure compliance with Ontario’s Gaming Control Act and the Standards.
Unibet obtained a license to launch online gambling in Ontario in March, ahead of the province’s legal market opening in the following month.
