Additional rules were introduced in April, and in October, sports sponsorship by gambling operators was required to end after the 2020-21 season. These measures faced opposition from industry groups like JDigital and the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), who argued they lacked evidence and unfairly treated state-run lotteries and private operators. However, Minister of Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzón believed similar advertising crackdowns would become standard across Europe. Both JDigital and the AMI have now filed appeals against the regulations in the Contentious Administrative Chamber of Spain’s Supreme Court. JDigital focused on the disproportionate impact of the restrictions, expressing concerns that they would leave gambling consumers vulnerable and potentially exacerbate problem gambling. They argued that advertising is necessary to direct players towards licensed operators and ensure a safe and responsible gambling environment. Both appeals have been admitted for processing by the Court, and interested parties have been given nine days to submit evidence.
