The AGCO is planning to ban certain advertising activities in gaming marketing and advertising.
Stakeholder engagement discussions will take place until 8 May 2023, and a decision will be announced afterwards.
The proposed change to the standards will prohibit the use of athletes, both active and retired, in gaming advertising.
It will also ban the use of cartoons, symbols, role models, social media influencers, celebrities, or entertainers who may appeal to minors under the age of 18.
After the stakeholder engagement period, affected operators and suppliers will have three months to comply with the new rules.
The AGCO monitors and identifies emerging risks, including advertising and marketing approaches that appeal to underage individuals using celebrities or athletes.
The potential harmful impact on vulnerable individuals, specifically underage persons, is a cause for concern.
The proposed changes to the standards coincide with the first anniversary of Ontario’s igaming market launch.
