Starting in September, the UK government is implementing new measures to regulate online gambling, including introducing maximum stakes for online slots. Stake limits will be set at £5 per spin after a 12-week consultation period.
These changes are part of the government’s larger strategy outlined in the Gambling Act white paper to protect consumers from gambling harm. The decision to set lower stake limits for younger adults is based on research showing this age group has the highest problem gambling rate.
GambleAware CEO Zoë Osmond supports the new limits, while the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) urges caution over the potential impact on industry members. The government is also considering other measures, such as affordability checks and a statutory levy, to further protect players and support the gambling industry.
