The gaming industry contributed €924m to the economy in 2020, a decrease of 40.8% from 2019’s contribution of €1.56bn.
The total revenue of the Authority in 2020 was €77.3m, a drop of 5.3% from the previous year’s revenue of €81.7m.
The revenue from Authority fees included €8.4m in licence fees, up 4.1% year-on-year, and €295,000 in application fees, down 38.2%.
Other sources of revenue brought in €3.5m, a significant increase from the previous year’s total.
Gaming companies’ compliance contributions and levies generated the majority of the revenue, amounting to €65.0m, a 10.0% decrease from the previous year.
The expenses of the regulator included €7.2m in staff costs, €1.1m in depreciation and amortisation, and €1.0m in contributions to other entities.
The operating revenue of the regulator after expenses was €65.2m, a decrease of 4.7% compared to the previous year.
The number of gaming machines in licensed casinos fell from 954 in 2019 to 909 in 2020.
A total of 387 gaming licenses were issued in 2020, with 82.1% of them being for remote gambling.
The MGA issued 69 warnings, suspended 3 licenses, and cancelled 12 licenses in 2020.
The MGA conducted 1,475 criminal probity screening checks in 2020, an increase of 13.5% compared to the previous year.
