Massachusetts saw a remarkable 17% increase in revenue in January compared to the previous highest month. The state fell just 1.1% short of December’s record, still accumulating $651.7m in what was another strong month for the sports betting industry. Tax collected was $5.8m, down 9.4% from December.
Since the launch of sports betting in January 2023, Massachusetts has shown encouraging growth. Online wagers accounted for 99.4% of January’s handle, with the online sector performing very strongly.
In terms of casino revenue, Massachusetts produced $93.5m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for January, with Encore Boston Harbor leading the way with $60.9m in table and slot GGR.
DraftKings remains the leader in Massachusetts, with a handle of $315.9m in January, although falling $4.5m short of December’s figure. FanDuel saw a 3.6% increase in sports betting handle to $194m, ranking second behind DraftKings.
ESPN Bet ranked third in the state with $45.4m in handle, while BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook followed in fourth and fifth place with $36.8m and $22.5m respectively.
WynnBet, operated by Wynn Resorts, ceased operations in Massachusetts but will continue to operate retail sports betting at Encore Boston Harbor. The brand is scaling back operations across multiple states, including Massachusetts.
