GamProtect, a groundbreaking safety solution facilitated by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), officially launched at Prospero House in London on Wednesday, 11 September 2024. This event marked a significant milestone in the UK gambling industry’s efforts to enhance player safety and reduce gambling-related harm.
The launch event began with an introductory speech by Grainne Hurst, the new CEO of the BGC, who has been involved in the development of GamProtect since its inception in 2020. Hurst highlighted the collaborative efforts and extensive development process that led to the creation of this innovative solution.
GamProtect is designed as a universal database that allows operators to securely share information about customers who show signs of gambling harm. This collaborative approach aims to protect vulnerable players across the entire UK-licensed gaming sector.
Key points about GamProtect include:
- Development and Launch: The concept for GamProtect was first proposed in February 2020, and after several years of development, the system went live last April;
- Participating Operators: Founding members include major operators such as Flutter, Entain, and bet365, which have also provided financial support for the project;
- Functionality: GamProtect enables operators to share data about customers who require additional support, ensuring consistent safer gambling measures across all participating platforms;
- Support and Oversight: The scheme is supported by the Gambling Commission, the Information Commissioner’s Office, and the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS);
- Non-Mandatory Participation: While participation is not mandatory, operators are encouraged to join to benefit from enhanced player protection and safer gambling practices;
- Current Impact: Over 5,000 players have been added to the scheme since its live launch, with millions of monthly users across participating operators;
Kane Purdy, Chairman of GamProtect and Managing Director of Gamesys Operations, emphasized that GamProtect is designed to aid the most vulnerable players without being overly restrictive. He addressed criticisms and highlighted the simplicity and effectiveness of the solution.
The launch event featured presentations from key figures, including Tim Miller from the Gambling Commission, and a panel discussion with industry experts such as Andreas Klug and Jacqueline Gazey from Entain. This provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the scheme’s technical aspects, data protection measures, and practical applications.
GamProtect represents a significant step forward in the UK gambling industry’s commitment to responsible gaming and player safety, and its launch marks an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to create a safer and more enjoyable gaming environment for all players.
