According to Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ), the gross gaming revenue of casinos in the country reached CLP47.8bn ($53.3m/€50.0m/£43.2m) in July 2023, after discounting inflation. This represents a decrease of 5.2% compared to July 2022.
So far in 2023, the casino win has been down year-on-year every month. In 2022, the win experienced a 5.3% decrease compared to 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
In July 2023, there was an increase of 13% in the number of people visiting the casinos, with a total of 635,751 attendees. However, the average expense per visit decreased by 16% compared to July 2022, amounting to CLP73,387.
Among the 22 casinos that are required to pay federal taxes, the total tax contribution in July was CLP17.1bn, which is a decrease of 0.8% in real terms compared to July 2022. This includes CLP7.3bn for gaming tax, diverted to regional governments and municipalities for development works, CLP7.1bn for VAT on gaming income, and $2.7bn for the tax on entry to gambling halls, which goes to the nation’s general funds.
The largest casino in Chile in terms of tax liability is Monticello Casino in the commune of O’Higgins, with a total contribution of CLP3.6bn. This amount is double that of the second largest casino, Enjoy Viña del Mar in Valparaiso. The specific gaming tax funds will be received by regional governments and municipalities in October 2023.
